How the COVID-19 Vaccine Rollout Continues to Prepare Healthcare for Future Challenges

July 1, 2021

There’s a lot to be proud of when it comes to the story of the COVID-19 vaccine development and rollout. The speed at which the industry responded was incredible, the impact of technology in the healthcare industry was apparent, and the global effort to fight the virus was truly impressive. The vaccine rollout has also shown just how much room for improvement there is in achieving efficiency in healthcare — specifically in distribution.

So much time, energy, and money went into developing these vaccines, but a centralized planning effort for facilitating vaccine delivery was lacking. Myriad strategies and infrastructures varied state by state — and even county by county. The final stage of the distribution process was often handed over to local health officials and hospital leaders, many of whom were already nearing their breaking point before the vaccine even arrived.

This state-by-state vaccine distribution approach and lack of central organization, which left some states falling behind, has highlighted the need for a unified strategy to make vaccines available in the most locations possible.

How to Meet the Next Big Challenge

Many of the problems associated with the vaccine rollout could have been prevented through the help of technology and via a more cohesive, unified strategy throughout the country. The good news? The successes and failures have taught us valuable lessons that can be applied to healthcare challenges going forward.
